MATH:Math in Focus: The Singapore Approach is used in the first grade curriculum. The creators of this program believe not only that all children can learn math but that they can also enjoy math. Math in Focus helps students build a solid conceptual understanding through the use of manipulative materials and visual models.

READING: the class uses the Houghton Mifflin series for reading and language arts. This series combines phonemic awareness, phonics, and literature-based reading, which use a variety of activities across the curriculum. We will be providing a spelling program using a phonetic base in learning basic spelling principles, word meaning, and dictionary skills. We are using the Modern Curriculum Press Phonics.

RELIGION:Blest are We, published by Silver Burdett Ginn Religion, is the series used by the first grade. The content provides the children opportunities to experience Prayer, community, to receive instruction in the essentials of Catholic Faith and to develop skills in loving God and their neighbor.

SCIENCE:The curriculum throughout the school year is divided into various units of study where the students are provided an opportunity to understand themselves and explore the world around them.  Additional units will be supplemented in individual classrooms. Scholastic News will also be used as a supplement to enhance the science curriculum.

Social Studies: A Child’s Place, published by Harcourt Brace, is a resource used for our social studies curriculum.  Some of the units included will be, At Home with My Family, Living in a Community, In and Around the Land, My Country & Heroes; and My World Near and Far. To enrich our program the children will experience the cultures of other countries. Scholastic News will also supplement this series
